Tough Love – Call me by your name
With amazing cinematic shots and powerful imagery, ‘Call me by your name’ succeeds in secluding you to the quite country life of Northern Italy, 1983. The film so beautifully depicts the internal struggle of a young man (Ellio), discovering his sexuality. Only, what he discovers is that which is “forbidden” – love for another man.
What is beautifully achieved by director Luca Guadagnino is the raw and honest portrayal of Ellio’s exploration. In addition actors Armie Hammer (Oliver) and Timothee Chalamet (Ellio) build amazing chemistry that pull you into their relationship.
Where the film does however lose, is in the slow progression of the story. Although they are extremely artistic shots; the short jump scenes depicting the passing of time, means that very little happens until you’re about 90 mins into the film.
Nonetheless with its style of character development, camera use and unique soundtrack, ‘Call me by your name’, tips its hat to classics such as ‘Juno’; with a European twist of course.
It truly is a beautiful film about first loves but if everybody would enjoy it, I’m not too sure. Definitely recommended for the art lover!
7/10 from the Detour.
